While on humanitarian assignment, his unit was never attacked by any militant faction, although danger loomed from cross-fire among territorial factions, Mike Sportello said.
Instead, most of the Iraqi citizens welcomed American assistance, especially food, Sportello said. Each day, Sportello fed badly malnourished children and their families.
For that reason alone, the war effort was worthy -- even if weapons of mass destruction are not found, Mike Sportello said.
"I'd like to think we saved a race of people," Mike Sportello said.
