LOCAL COVERAGE IDENTIFIES ONE OF SUNDAY'S FALLEN.

I've heard he was with 1-37 Armor out of Friedberg.
Army Sgt. David Parson, a father of three who married into the locally prominent Belman family, was killed Sunday in fighting in Iraq.

The husband of Spotsylvania County native Mary Elizabeth Belman Parson, he is believed to be the first person with Fredericksburg-area ties to perish in the military operation.

"We were told he was shot in the back," said Stafford County School Board member Robert Belman, Mary Elizabeth Parson's uncle.

Parson was among three U.S. soldiers killed in attacks in Baghdad Sunday and yesterday, raising the total to 30 American combat deaths since major hostilities ended May 1.

In the latest slayings, a roadside bomb killed one soldier traveling in an Army convoy yesterday, and a second American--apparently Parson--was shot to death in a Sunday night gunbattle in the troubled Sunni Muslim neighborhood of Azamiyah, the military said. Both soldiers belonged to the Army's 1st Armored Division, the Germany-based unit occupying Baghdad.

Tragic.
