You may not be aware that many GIs are barred from giving blood due to having served in various places.

I'm still barred from giving blood because I was stationed in Europe in the early 90s when mad cow disease was a problem.
Soldiers who served in Iraq will not be allowed to give blood for a year after returning home because of a rare skin parasite that has infected 22 members of the military, federal health officials said Thursday.
